The Fanny Pack Packing List: What Actually Fits

Seth Haber

The fanny pack spent a couple of decades as a punchline and then quietly won. "Everything you need, nothing you don't, and always hands free" was never a bad idea, it just needed better design.

This is the packing list for the Everyday Fanny Pack, scenario by scenario, from the people who live out of theirs.

First, the honest capacity check

A fanny pack is not a duffel, and that's the point. Think of it as the essentials filter: if it doesn't fit, you probably didn't need it. Ours has five pockets, a key clip, and a secret stash spot, which might sound modest until you hear what people fit in there.

Our favorite field report comes from a hospital: "This holds everything, including my phone, pen, small memo pad, and a pack of non-slip socks, and still has a tiny space left for something else" (Marie Hofmann, verified review).

If it can run a nursing shift, it can handle your farmers market.

The trail loadout

  • Phone (that's the camera too)
  • Car key on the key clip, so it stops living in your anxiety
  • Lip balm + sunscreen stick
  • Snack bar or two
  • Dog bags, if you're hiking with the good boy
  • Cash or card in the secret stash

Water bottle stays in your hand or your car; everything else rides at your hip. The waterproof zippers mean a surprise sprinkle isn't a crisis.

The concert / festival loadout

  • Phone, card, ID
  • Earplugs (your future self says thanks)
  • Lip balm
  • Portable charger
  • The secret stash holds the emergency twenty

Wear it crossbody and it stays in front of you in a crowd, which your pockets can't promise.

Fair warning about taking it out in public: "I literally had someone at Costco chase me down, because she and her supervisor were talking about my bag and wanted to know where I got it." (Rebekah Hennes, verified review)

The travel loadout

  • Passport + boarding pass
  • Phone + charger + earbuds
  • Pen (the customs form pen shortage is real)
  • Gum, meds, hand sanitizer

Everything the airport asks for lives in one zip, instead of four different pockets you pat down like you're frisking yourself.

The errands / parent loadout

  • Phone, keys, card
  • Wipes (non-parents: you'll come around)
  • The snack that prevents the meltdown
  • One small toy of negotiation

Kid on one arm, groceries in the other, essentials on your hip.

Wear it your way

Belt bag, crossbody sling, hip pack, over the shoulder: the strap adjusts to fit however you carry.

The quilted back panel means it rides comfortably all day without digging in, and the whole thing weighs about as much as your phone.

One more thing

Our fanny pack designs drop in limited editions, so if a colorway speaks to you, listen.

Every pack plants a tree through our 1-for-1 Giveback, and like everything we make, it's backed by our Happiness Guarantee. Hands free, conscience clear.
