Founder's Corner

The most important thing I want to say this week is a massive thank you to to everyone who has written notes of support and kindness on our social posts in the last few weeks.

It's so mind-blowing (and disheartening) to see the Anger Algorithm in full effect.

Even with 100K+ followers on Instagram, our posts normally get seen by ~100 people or less. A handful of likes, maybe an emoji comment or two. Our best content, our biggest product launches, it really doesn't seem to matter.

But, share something even remotely controversial today, and there's a good chance the algorithm will send every rage-baiting troll, bot, and otherwise to comment on it.

We had so many "I'll never buy from you again" and "I'm unfollowing you" comments.

To anyone reading the comments, you'd think we lost a lot of loyal customers. Just by telling people to be kind, no less.

But the thing is: They weren't customers. They weren't following us. They're mostly just trolls. And bots. Both.

You don't buy products from a brand that prints "Feel Good. Do Good. Pass It On." on every product, runs a Pay What You Can program, and is on a 20+ year mission to spread happiness - and then wake up one day to one of our social media posts and say "Wait, Trek Light doesn't hate all the people I hate? I'm out."

The only good thing about an algorithm designed to breed anger and argument, is that it also got our posts in front of a lot of good people too. Our community of customers and friends showed up, along with a lot of new people who likely had never heard of us before, but saw an opportunity to say thanks to a brand for having a moral compass and speaking up.

A few people also wrote to share that we really weeded out our "bad" customers with our posts.

But, here's the thing, my goal is never to weed out, but to inspire.

I don't want to push anyone away by sharing about kindness or empathy towards EVERYONE, I want to bring more people in.

When you use your voice to stand up to bullies, it inspires others who may have stayed quiet. And when enough people use their voice, even the bullies start to wonder if they're on the right side.

I don't want a community of customers who all share the same politics, and I don't want to create a brand that's an echo chamber.

Unless that echo is Love. Decency. Equality. Empathy.

I said it before, and I'll say it again - it's not politics, it's humanity.

And in that, I hope we're all on the same side.

What We're Reading

I’m in a book club with some of my closest friends here in Colorado and we’re reading The Correspondent this month.

I’m loving it so far, and it’s the sort of story that really stays with you. The entire book is written through honest and heartfelt letters, and it serves as a beautiful reminder of how meaningful it can be to slow down and truly connect with people.

If you've got any great book suggestions, let us know in the comment section!

Product News

State Towel Collection

It's always bothered us that nearly all State Art products are either done in a cheesy art style, or printed on low-quality products, and often both.

We set out to change that, and make towels that elevated our kitchen decor instead of bringing it down, and we couldn't be prouder of the results.

Every towel features beautiful, 100% hand-drawn illustrations (no AI art!). And every Trek Light towel is hands down the best quick-dry, 100% recycled, kitchen & dish towel you can buy.

We've done five states so far: California, Colorado, Texas, Rhode Island and Oregon.

Our towels have been selling out faster than we can keep them in stock, but all of the new designs are available for a limited Preorder right now.

What state should we do next? What should we feature on it? Let us know in the comments!!

What We're Listening To

Everybody's Gotta Learn Sometime
Beck

I’ve always loved Beck and I was super excited to see that he released an album of covers, deep cuts and rarities last week.

The release feels especially timely because they’re all songs about love, which the world needs more than ever right now.

It's a mellow listen. One that makes me want to light candles and listen in the tub, which is another thing the world could probably use more of right now.

Two of my favorites so far are True Love Will Find You In The End and Can’t Help Falling In Love. What are yours?

From Our Table To Yours

With all the Super Bowl wing recipes hitting our feeds right now, I thought I'd share this gem from my family recipe collection. My mom would make these for every Super Bowl I can remember as a kid, and they were always gone before anything else.

A simple & easy recipe that stands out from the pack of 'traditional' wings in a beautiful way - they're sticky with a hint of sweet, completely balanced by a salty & savory Asian flavor.

They bake right in the marinade, and should stay moist even if you overcook them a bit, so don't sweat it and enjoy the party.

Annie's Super Bowl Sticky Wings

5 lbs of chicken wings
1 1/2 C of Brown Sugar
1 tsp of garlic powder
1 tsp mustard powder
5 oz of Soy Sauce

Optional:
3-4 cloves of chopped garlic (or fresh ginger)
Sriracha, if you want to add some heat
Scallions or sesame seeds for garnish

Directions:
Mix all ingredients in a bowl, and combine with wings
Marinate for several hours, or overnight.

Preheat oven to 425
Bake for ~45 min - 1 hr (or until wings reach ~165 deg)
Stir several times while cooking, turn down oven temp if sauce is burning
Optional: Broil for a couple minutes at high heat to finish with more char/crisp if desired.
Add scallions or sesame seeds if using, and serve

Quote of the Week

Everyone just wants to be loved

Everyone wants love

See the god in everyone

Everyone leaves out no-one

And everything besides love is cowardice

You wanna be brave, you wanna be tough?

Peace and love is the toughest, hardest thing you can do

Build a bridge, it's where the courage is.
