Founder's Corner

Back in the saddle again.

I spent my Father’s Day weekend rafting down a river, eating great meals with over 20 friends (and new friends), fishing, campfire storytelling, and sleeping in a hammock under the stars each night.

Colorado showed up in all its glory for me. During the first sunset, a beautiful bighorn sheep walked up on the rocks overlooking the river and spent the evening checking out our campsite. 25 years of living in Colorado, and that was a first for me.

The next morning, I was one step away from a huge bull snake that blocked my path on my way to the river. I gave it a little nudge with my fishing pole, hoping to keep on my way, and it couldn't have cared less.

Lesson of the day, nature wins.

Even with all the fun on the river and around the campfire, sleeping in a hammock each night was an easy highlight for me. I spent countless nights sleeping in my hammock during the early years of Trek Light, but it’s a much rarer opportunity for me since the family has grown.

A night in the hammock has a way of taking me back to all those nights before it. The memories come flooding back, along with gratitude for everything that a simple hammock has given me.

It’s hard to believe how many days and years I spent working to convince people that a lightweight, portable hammock was something they needed in their lives. It sounds like such an easy sell (right?), but in those early years (2003 - 2008 or so), it was harder than you’d imagine.

I was an educator more than a salesperson, teaching people how to lie and sleep in their hammocks, and handing out inspiration on where to use it like a hammockical Dr. Seuss (it’s great on a boat! use it to float! take it on a plane! it’s good for your brain!)

And then here we are 20 years later, and it still blows my mind to see hammocks at nearly every campsite, park, college campus, and beyond.

And here I am, still rocking away and loving the product that started the whole journey for me.

Hundreds of product launches later, I don’t think I’ve ever sold a single product that I didn’t personally love and use in my life, and I sleep pretty good at night knowing that. Especially when I'm in my hammock.

From Our Table To Yours

Summer Steak with Corn and Tomatoes

This is the kind of meal that my riverside weekend was full of: simple, in season, and built for a crowd.

It's a Smitten Kitchen recipe, skirt steak with a cold salad of sweet corn and cherry tomatoes. The corn soaks up the vinaigrette while the steak rests, so every bite has a little tang to it.

Cook it on the grill, the stove, or over a campfire if you're lucky enough to be near one.

Product Spotlight

The Original, Still Going Strong

After a weekend of sleeping under the stars, I'm not exactly subtle about what product I want you to try most.

If you've never spent a night in a Trek Light hammock, or even a Sunday afternoon, this is your chance to find out what hammock bliss is all about.

It's the hammock that made me quit my job, leave my career and a computer science degree behind, and roll the dice to share this hammock with the world - that has to tell you something, right?

Our best-selling Double Hammock with Pro Hanging Straps is still on sale in Aqua & Charcoal for $58, straps included (they're $24.95 on their own). It's a final sale while they last, and we're clearing them out to make room for more styles to come.

Prefer a little extra style when you relax? Our new River Trout and Midnight Mushroom Double Hammocks both come with our Pro Straps too, and they're in stock and shipping right now.

Over twenty years in, it's still the product I reach for first and the one that brings me the most joy. Give it a try and I guarantee (literally) you'll understand why. Quitting your job is optional.

What We're Listening To

A Live One
Phish

Summer has a sound for me, and it's hard for me to think of Summer without thinking of this band.

Phish kick off their summer tour in a couple of weeks, and they close it right here in Colorado over Labor Day weekend, with three nights at Dick's in Commerce City. If you've read along for a while, you know I'm not shy about my love for Phish (see the write-up of my recent Sphere experience in Volume 23).

If you've never gone down the rabbit hole and wondered what the fuss is about, here's the thing: Phish is a live band first. The studio records are good, but the magic happens in a room, in the moment, with a jam that goes somewhere nobody (including the band) ever planned.

The best way in without a ticket is A Live One, their first official live album from 1995. It's a little bit of everything, including a thirty-minute "Tweezer" that tells you exactly what you're signing up for.

Press play, find a hammock, and let it, and your expectations, go for a ride.

Quote of the Week

"Eventually, all things merge into one, and a river runs through it."
