Founder's Corner

I was thinking about it this week, and the Fourth of July might be the most low-pressure relaxing holiday we've got. No gifts to buy, no cards to write. No "summer's ending" Labor Day vibes. Just a little summer break, an excuse to relax and fire up the grill, and a lot of nostalgia running through it all.

That's about as close to the Trek Light mission statement as a holiday gets (besides National Hammock Day, of course).

Summer is the best, but it also has a way of quickly turning into one more thing to have to plan and optimize. Vacation planning, packed weekends with an overloaded social calendar, and that nagging feeling that it's all going by too fast. It's "fun stress", but it can get to you if you don't recognize it.

The best summer days for me are the ones that aren't planned at all. A backyard, a stocked cooler, and a long afternoon that nobody wants to end.

So this weekend, that's the whole to-do list. Find a patch of grass or a spot by the water, and let the day run as slow as it wants to.

Happy Fourth. And happy 250 years to America. We've come a long way, and no matter how challenging these times are, I do believe we're still learning and growing our way to better days ahead.

Have a great weekend, be safe with your fireworks (or skip them entirely if your whole state is on fire like ours), and save me a spot in the hammock.

From Our Table To Yours

Red Berry Ricotta Galette

If you're bringing something to a cookout this weekend, here's your move.

It's a Smitten Kitchen galette, a free-form tart you make with red and blue berries for a patriotic Fourth of July color scheme.

The whole thing comes together in about 15 minutes and bakes in 30, so you can decide to make it at the last second (you were going to anyway).

No perfect crust required. Galettes are supposed to look a little rustic. Bring it anywhere and watch it disappear.

A Front-Row Seat to the Sky

Here's the one piece of gear I'd grab for the Fourth: a good blanket.

Not for the couch this time, it's going with you.

Spread one out for the fireworks, the picnic, or a lazy afternoon in the park where you don't move for three hours. Our handwoven throw blankets are made to get used, indoors or out, and they start at $88.

If you want to lean all the way into the occasion, the Halley's Comet Blanket is the one I'd pack for a night under the sky. It feels about right for a weekend of watching things light up overhead.

What We're Listening To

If backyard grilling music was a genre...wait, I'm going to reframe that.

Backyard grilling music IS a genre, and Creedence is in the Hall of Fame.

This record came out in July of 1970, 56 years ago, and it's so jam packed with CCR hits that it'd be easy to mistake it for a Greatest Hits collection. But then, Creedence also has a Greatest Hits album, and a Greatest Hits Vol II.

"Lookin' Out My Back Door," "Up Around the Bend," "Who'll Stop the Rain," "Run Through The Jungle" - it's hit after hit, and I'd bet you know every word to most of them whether you think you do or not.

Put it on this weekend and let it run start to finish. Nobody's reaching for the skip button on this one.

Quote of the Week

"Live in each season as it passes; breathe the air, drink the drink, taste the fruit, and resign yourself to the influences of each."

- Henry David Thoreau, Journal (1853)
