Founder's Corner

"What do you want to be this year?"

It's the timeless Halloween question that carries more weight than we give it credit for.

A chance to let our imaginations run wild, to be whoever or whatever we want to be.

It's a freedom we often forget we have every single day of the year, but Halloween is that one day (in the US, anyway) where society has collectively decided it's okay to act like a kid again.

To be silly or scary, witty or crude, to stop being so normal, and let your freak flag fly.

Halloween gives us all a chance, if you embrace it, to be creative and act like a kid again, no matter your age.

And that makes it our best holiday, in my humble opinion.

We'll be hitting the town with an adorable cat-icorn, and a wizard, or maybe a Lizard Wizard, to be determined. When you can't decide, the right answer is almost always "both".

Stay safe, and have fun acting, and feeling, like a kid again - it's the solution to damn near everything.

What We're Listening To

Live 1966: "The Royal Albert Hall Concert"
Bob Dylan

This week's pick is inspired by the fact that Heather & I just finally got to watch A Complete Unknown this week, after having it on our must-watch list for months. (We're still in the phase of parenting where a full movie is a rare treat)

If you don't like Bob Dylan, I won't guarantee that this will convince you otherwise - but it's the album that first made it all click for me, so maybe it will do the same for you.

The first half is an acoustic masterpiece. The second set is the loud and boisterous electric contrast that angered all the folk purists in 1965, and for me, it stands as the perfect metaphor:

A reminder that we aren't defined by what other people want us to be. That we don't always have to choose a team, or a dogma, that keeps us from seeing what's on the other side.

And a reminder that there are times to appreciate the quiet, and times when we all need to shake things up and be LOUD.

From Our Table To Yours

Salted Chocolate Chunk Cookies

If you like to bake cookies as much as I do, you know the "perfect chocolate chip cookie" is a never-ending quest.

This is the recipe that finally stopped me from the non-stop experimenting, and the one that will get you all the coveted "WHO made these cookies?!" when you bring them to a party.

They're the perfect treat for a chilly night (ok, who am I kidding...any night). And I love to make them in bulk and keep pre-balled dough in the freezer, it makes it easy to pop a few in the oven whenever we're craving them.

Whatever you do, don't skip the sprinkle of flaky sea salt, that's the cherry on top!

Quote of the Week

It's Halloween! It's Halloween!
The moon is full and bright
And we shall see what can't be seen
On any other night

Skeletons and ghosts and ghouls,
Grinning goblins fighting duels,
Werewolves rising from their tombs,
Witches on their magic brooms

In masks and gowns
We haunt the street
And knock on doors
For trick or treat

Tonight we are
The king and queen,
For oh tonight
It's Halloween!
