Founder's Corner

Welcome to the new home of the Weekly Light.

Sending out the Weekly Light as an email served us great in the beginning, but there have been a lot of limitations to the format that I’ve been eager to resolve.

So, we’re giving the Weekly Light a permanent home on our site. Why? You can now view the entire archive to see issues you may have missed, stream music while you read, search for past recipes & recommendations, and easily bookmark or share any content with a friend without needing to forward them an email.

There’s also a new comment & discussion section at the bottom, which is a dream come true for me to turn this from a one-way newsletter into an ongoing conversation with you, our community of readers. I hope you’ll use it.

But....before I go, some things need to be said.

I had already written this week's issue before seeing the news that another US citizen and fellow human, Alex Pretti, was senselessly murdered over the weekend by ICE thugs.

And yes, "thugs" is the only word I have for masked, heavily armed men shoving a woman to the ground, and then shooting the man who tried to help her up 9 TIMES at point-blank range.

I thought about scrapping everything I had put together, but one of the reasons I created the Weekly Light is to give you (and us) a distraction from the doom scrolling that has become almost impossible to avoid.

I want to focus on the things that connect us and lift us up - music that lights up your soul, meals that bring us together, and words and art that inspire us when we need it most.

But, as anyone knows who has followed along with us for the last 20+ years, we will ALWAYS lead with our hearts and use whatever voice we have to speak up when the time calls for it.

The balance, as always, is the hardest part.

Doing what we can to bring some light and distraction into your life, without staying silent in the face of some of the darkest things I've witnessed in my 45+ years of life, is something we'll have to navigate together as time goes on.

But, #@$ - it's hard to write about my favorite music, or a damn (amazing) egg salad sandwich, while I watch hatred and cruelty given a free pass by a government that lies about what we can see with our own eyes.

It's hard to create fun social media content, launch new products, or feel like we can be our happiness-spreading selves, while things are so heavy around us.

It's hard to run a small business and vie for your attention, while knowing that there are so many more important things in the world that also need your attention.

But, the darker things get, the more we need the light, so we're going to keep doing what we do, and keep being grateful for every ounce of support you show us in return.

It's not politics. It's humanity.

We've already received all the creative "Go Woke, Go Broke" comments when we've spoken up for human decency before. And we're still here, and still running a business with our hearts above all.

If you want to turn words into action, I encourage all of you to contact your local congress members and let them know how you feel.

What's happening in someone else's neighborhood, or to someone else's family, will be in all of our backyards soon if we don't make our voices heard.

Thanks for bearing with us as we navigate these crazy times and discover how to survive them as a small business, as parents, and as empathetic humans.

From Our Table To Yours

The Best Egg Salad Sandwich

A perfect egg salad sandwich is such a comfort food for me.

But I’d always avoid making it at home because of the chore of cooking and peeling all the eggs.

If you’ve got a knack for peeling eggs, then by all means rock out with your bad self. But, our local Costco sells pre-peeled hard-boiled eggs, and it has made recipes like this (and deviled eggs) a dream for me.

The addition of lemon, zest, scallions, and parsley take this basic recipe to the next level without overcomplicating it, and you’ll immediately see why it lives up to the title of the Best Egg Salad Sandwich.

What We're Listening To

Whoa. OK, I was planning to share Cat Power’s latest release Redux here (I still will), so I was listening to it while writing this.

When the short EP ended, the algorithm gods gave me Cat Power’s I Think Of Angels, a track from the 2021 film Flag Day that I had never heard.

I immediately had to stop writing and just listen. Then I got teary-eyed and had to listen again. Am I feeling overly emotional with everything going on in the world? You bet. Is this one of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard? Absolutely.

Next thing I knew, I was going down the Wikipedia rabbit hole, learning how it was originally written by Icelandic musician KK. His older sister died in a car accident, and he wrote this absolute masterpiece of a song, while waiting to go on stage shortly after her funeral. Cat Power’s cover is beautiful, but don’t miss the original, sung by KK’s other sister, Ellen Kristjánsdóttir.

And once you’ve finished crying, it’s time to get back to where I started and give Cat Power’s new EP Redux a listen.

The 3-song EP begins with an inspired cover of James Brown’s “Try Me”, follows up with a revamp of her own “Could We”, and ends it all with a cover of Prince’s “Nothing Compares 2 U” as only Cat Power can.

Enjoy.
